Why this temple matters
Founded by Sri Madhvacharya in the 13th century, Udupi is the heart of the Dvaita tradition. Worship is run by the eight Ashta Mathas in turn, and the temple kitchen feeds thousands of devotees every day.
The story
Kanakadasa, a devotee turned away because of his caste, sang to Krishna from outside the temple. The wall cracked and the idol turned to face him. Devotees still have darshan through the Kanakana Kindi, the window that marks the spot.
What to look for
- Darshan through the Navagraha Kindi, the silver-plated window with nine holes
- The Kanakana Kindi and Kanakadasa's shrine
- The Madhva Sarovara tank
- Lunch at the temple (anna prasadam)
Festivals and when to go
- Paryaya, every two years in January, when the next Matha takes charge of worship
- Krishna Janmashtami and Vittal Pindi
- Laksha Deepotsava in November–December
The practical truth
- Men are usually asked to remove shirts for some sevas and the meal hall.
- Udupi food is famous; leave time for a proper meal.
- Malpe beach and St Mary's Island are close by if the family wants a break.
