Why this temple matters

This temple of Durga stands on an island in the middle of the Nandini river near Mangaluru. It is famous for its own Yakshagana troupes, who perform the traditional dance-drama as an offering.

The story

When the demon Arunasura troubled the land, Devi took the form of a swarm of bees (Bhramari) and destroyed him. She then rested here, in the middle of the river.
