Why this temple matters
A rare place that is both one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the Shakti Peethas. It sits high in the Nallamala forest above the Krishna river.
The story
Kartikeya left Kailash in anger after Ganesha won the race around the world. Shiva and Parvati came to Srisailam to be near him, and stayed as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba.
What to look for
- The Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba shrines
- The Krishna river gorge and the Srisailam dam
- Pathala Ganga, reached by steps or ropeway
Festivals and when to go
- Maha Shivaratri Brahmotsavam
- Ugadi
- Karthika Masam (November)
The practical truth
- The ghat road passes through a tiger reserve and is closed to traffic at night; we plan travel times around it.
- Traditional dress is required for some darshans.
