Why this temple matters
Among the ruins of the Vijayanagara capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Virupaksha temple is still alive with daily worship. The landscape around it is linked with the Ramayana's Kishkindha.
The story
Pampa, a local goddess identified with Parvati, did penance on the banks of the Tungabhadra to win Shiva, who married her here as Virupaksha. Nearby Anjanadri hill is revered as the birthplace of Hanuman.
