Why this temple matters
Here the Lord is kept covered in sandalwood paste all year, looking like a lingam. Only once a year, on Akshaya Tritiya, is the paste removed for the Nija Roopa darshan of his true form.
The story
The Lord appeared to his devotee Prahlada in a combined form of Varaha and Narasimha, the two avatars who destroyed Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu.
What to look for
- The finely carved Kalinga-style stone architecture
- The hilltop setting above Visakhapatnam
Festivals and when to go
- Chandanotsavam (Akshaya Tritiya, April–May), the Nija Roopa darshan
- Narasimha Jayanti
The practical truth
- Chandanotsavam draws huge crowds for one day; book stays early.
