Why this temple matters
On the banks of the Godavari, Bhadrachalam is one of the most important Rama temples in South India. Its Sri Rama Navami wedding celebration (Sitarama Kalyanam) draws lakhs of devotees.
The story
Kancherla Gopanna, a tax official, used government money to build this temple and was imprisoned by the Golconda ruler. Rama and Lakshmana are said to have appeared and repaid the money in gold coins. Gopanna became the saint-poet Bhakta Ramadasu, whose songs are still sung.
