Why this temple matters
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the four Char Dham. Pilgrims from every corner of India come here, many after a yatra to Kashi, to complete a lifelong vow.
The story
After the war in Lanka, Sri Rama wished to worship Shiva here. Hanuman was sent to bring a lingam from Kailash, and when he was delayed, Sita made a lingam of sand. Both are worshipped in the temple: the Ramalingam made by Sita and the Vishwalingam brought by Hanuman.
What to look for
- The famous long pillared corridors, among the longest in any Indian temple
- The 22 theerthams (holy wells) inside the temple, where pilgrims bathe before darshan
- Agni Theertham, the sea at the temple's edge
- Dhanushkodi at the tip of the island
Festivals and when to go
- Maha Shivaratri
- Thirukalyanam (July–August)
- Mahalaya Amavasya and Thai Amavasya, important days for rituals for ancestors
The practical truth
- Many pilgrims bathe at Agni Theertham and then in the 22 temple wells before darshan. Carry a change of clothes.
- Ancestral rites can be arranged here; tell us early so we can plan with a priest.
- The island is reached across the Pamban bridge; allow for traffic on festival days.
Timings, rules and festival dates change. We confirm the current details for every yatra.
