Why this temple matters
At the southern tip of India, where the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meet, Devi stands as the eternal virgin goddess. It is one of the Shakti Peethas, and seeing sunrise here is part of the pilgrimage for many.
The story
Devi took the form of a young girl to defeat the demon Banasura, who could only be killed by a virgin. She waited here to marry Shiva, but the wedding never took place. She remains Kanya Kumari, doing penance at the land's end.
