Why this temple matters
Kerala's capital takes its name from this temple: Thiru-Anantha-puram, the city of Ananta. The Travancore royal family dedicated their kingdom to Padmanabha and ruled as his servants. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams.
The story
Vishnu appeared to the sage Divakara Muni as a child, then vanished into a tree, which fell and took the form of the reclining Lord. The idol is so long that devotees see it through three doors: the face, the navel with Brahma on the lotus, and the feet.
What to look for
- Darshan of the reclining Lord through three doors
- The seven-tiered eastern gopuram
- The long corridor of carved granite pillars
Festivals and when to go
- Alpashy Utsavam (October–November) and Painkuni Utsavam (March–April), with the Aarattu procession to the sea
- Lakshadeepam, once every six years
The practical truth
- Strict dress code: men in mundu without shirts; women in saree or traditional dress (mundu can be hired at the gate). Non-Hindus are not allowed inside.
- Phones and cameras are not allowed inside.
