Why this temple matters

Known across Kerala for its palpayasam, a rice and milk offering made here since ancient times, and for the Chembakassery royal connection.

The story

Krishna, disguised as a sage, challenged the king to a game of chess and asked for rice grains doubling on each square. When the king could not pay, Krishna revealed himself and said the debt could be repaid by serving payasam to pilgrims forever.

What to look for

  • The palpayasam offered to the Lord and shared as prasadam
  • The Kerala-style temple in the backwater country

Festivals and when to go

  • Aaraattu (March–April)
  • Ambalappuzha Vela

The practical truth

  • Traditional dress code applies.
  • Combine with the Alappuzha backwaters for a gentle rest day.
