Why this temple matters
Built by the Chola emperor Rajaraja I and completed around 1010 CE, the Big Temple is one of the greatest achievements of Indian temple architecture. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Great Living Chola Temples, and still a place of daily worship.
The story
Tradition says Rajaraja built the temple after a vision, as an offering of the whole Chola kingdom to Shiva. The temple walls carry inscriptions recording the gifts, dancers, musicians and lamps the king and queen dedicated, so you are reading the temple's own history as you walk.
What to look for
- The towering vimana over the sanctum, rising in granite above the shrine
- The huge monolithic Nandi facing the sanctum
- The very large Shiva lingam in the sanctum
- Chola-era frescoes and inscriptions along the corridors
Festivals and when to go
- Maha Shivaratri
- Sadhaya Vizha, celebrating Rajaraja Chola's birth star (October–November)
The practical truth
- The open stone courtyard gets very hot by midday. Mornings and evenings are kinder.
- Combine with Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram, the other two Great Living Chola Temples, on a heritage day.
