Why this temple matters
Often called the Dwarka of the South, Guruvayur is the most visited temple in Kerala. Families come here for weddings, a child's first rice feeding (choroonu) and to offer their weight in bananas, sugar or other items (thulabharam).
The story
The idol is said to have been worshipped by Krishna himself in Dwarka. When Dwarka sank, Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu carried it here and installed it with Shiva's blessing, so the place was named Guru-vayur.
