Why this temple matters
Here Shiva is worshipped in his dancing form. Chidambaram is the Akasha (space) lingam among the Pancha Bhoota sthalams, and the temple is cared for by the hereditary Dikshitar priests. Many Tamil Shaivites simply call it "Koil", the temple.
The story
Sages in the Thillai forest witnessed Shiva's Ananda Thandavam, the dance of bliss, in answer to the prayers of Patanjali and Vyaghrapada. The "Chidambara Rahasyam", an empty space behind a curtain in the sanctum, represents the formless presence of the divine.
What to look for
- The golden roof over the Chit Sabha, where Nataraja dances
- The four gopurams, with sculptures of the 108 dance poses of Bharatanatyam
- The Shivaganga tank
- Shrine of Govindaraja (Vishnu) within the same complex
Festivals and when to go
- Arudra Darshan (Margazhi, December–January)
- Aani Thirumanjanam (June–July)
- Natyanjali dance festival around Maha Shivaratri
The practical truth
- Men may be asked to remove shirts in the inner shrines; modest traditional dress is best.
- Combine with Vaitheeswaran Koil and the Navagraha temples nearby.
